Medieval Market Charter

In 1285, King Edward I granted the village a royal charter to hold a weekly market every Wednesday. This charter transformed the settlement from a small farming community into a thriving market town, attracting traders from across the region.

The market cross, erected in the 14th century, still stands in the village square and is a Grade I listed structure. Although the weekly market no longer operates, the annual Charter Day celebration commemorates this important milestone in the parish's history.
